If you've followed some of the many pages of this Blog or have browsed through this website, you already know I am an originality freak. Here is another example.... My car came to me from Arizona, and most if not all rubber was cooked to a hardened crisp and had to be replaced. On the inside of the car, the vinyl interior was hard and cracked, not to mention stained, and the original headliner was just toast. All of that had to go. Another interior item that looked like it had roasted in the heat was the interior clothes hooks. They were a very dark brown- nearly black. I bought new ones and they are shown below- side by side with the originals. These replacements seemed to be very white, but I just put them away along with the originals. Good thing I don't throw away original parts though, look what I saw when I went back to get the replacement parts out for installation. The back side of the very dark originals was gray. Not white, gray. So, I figured what the heck, I might as well attempt to restore the originals. I tried cleaning with everything I could think of, but there was no impact on the color at all. Scrubbing with steel wool resulted in almost no change, still very dark. Ok, it was time to get more aggressive- I used sandpaper and a fingernail file.
Result is below. I will be re-installing my gray original hooks. I mentioned in my post on 2/26 that I was about to tackle getting the windshield wipers, windshield washer system and the glovebox all installed. Here is it a month later, and I can finally say these tasks are in the Complete column. Photos below, and I am pleased with the outcome. I had a couple of comments/questions about the glycerin bottle shown above. I put it in that direction just for the photo. I wanted the bottom to show because reproduction bottles have OBP (Orange Bar Products) on the bottom. Mine does not. Normally it should be put in there the opposite way, so the the top is in the up position when the door is closed. Anyway, my picture failed to show the bottom well enough, so I am adding the photo below. It isn't pretty, but it's mine! Also notice the elastic is original, not new. Tip: The little buffers that go in the corners were difficult to install. It is a tight fit and I now realize that it would have been easier if I installed them first- before the glove box. That way I could have pulled them through from the back side.
Sold an extra Messko gauge & pouch this week and while getting it ready for photos I decided I should do a better job of posting photos of my tool kit. Showing the overall kit below, but individual tools are shown in the TOOL KIT SECTION of my website. My kit is nearly the way I want it now, but still want to find a PORSCHE shop towel like shown below. Please contact me if you know of one.
Went to the garage to work on the wipers and could not find all the parts. Ended up spending an hour re-organizing parts.
Came across a carefully stored NOS part that I am anxious to install. I am again waiting for warm weather to install it though- because I want to do one more cleaning and polishing of the paint before the installation. Still, what a darn beautiful NOS authentic part. It will look awesome. ps- never found the darn wiper parts and had to order them. |
