The first thing when getting a used car (especially one that is nearly 50 years old) is to remember that stopping the vehicle is more important than making it go! I know of lots of folks who focus on washing and making the vehicle pretty, then on tuning the engine. But driving down the road with bad brakes- that's just a no-no.
So, looking through the stack of receipts the brakes had been done within the last few years, but no details were given as to what the service included. Then, a quick visual inspection showed me the flexible brake hoses were ORIGINAL. Yes, our bus was an early 1977 model, produced in August of 1976. The brake hoses still had bands on them with the manufacturing date in 1976. Originality is a nice thing, but not on flexible brake lines. So, I went to work and did a full service on the brakes. I left the pads in place, but the rest was all changed out. The bus brakes were functioning well, but I am glad to now know that it's operating with new lines!
