Steering coupler

Ask any long time 356er and you'll know that steering couplers have a limited life.  The 356 C steering coupler is different than the earlier couplers, and it is prone to degradation of the rubber.  
Below is a photo of mine after being removed.  It came out in 3 pieces even though at a quick inspection it looked ok.  I removed it not because it looked bad, but because I knew it was original, over 50 years old, and the rubber had to be compromised by time and the elements.  It did not break after removal or during removal, it was already in pieces.  
So, a safety tip to all new 356 owners- if you don't know how old your steering coupler is, pull it out for a full inspection or replacement.
​Pictures also show my new coupler and the ground strap after some cleaning.  The ground strap fastens across the coupler so that the steering shaft is grounded (think horn).
